What is Trigger Point Myotherapy (TPM)?
Myotherapy, also known as muscle therapy, uses massage and pressure on muscles and connective tissue to restore the natural balance of the body. It is a method for relieving pain and related stress based on the application of compression to trigger points.
What Are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are defined as hypersensitive locations in the muscles. They are tight, tender congested muscle knots filled with toxins and waste that cause the muscle to spasm, limit the movement of joints, and cause increased nerve sensitivity ranging from sharp pain to a dull ache. Trigger points often do not occur in the same location where the pain is felt. Instead the pain may occur some distance from the actual location of the trigger point.
How Does TPM Work?
TPM is a non-invasive technique utilizing the hands, and fingers of the myotherapist to locate trigger points within the body. The myotherapist then uses various compression techniques to help relieve these trigger points. Passive stretching is also used to help re-educate the muscles to what they are capable of doing. The combination of the therapy with the stretching helps to develop flexibility, strength and stamina in the muscles alleviating pain and stiffness.
